General Fitness Training / General Running

Posted by on Thursday, August 12, 2004 (PST)

My breathing is a mess...my stride is gone, and my breathing is labored through my distance runs. What can I do to fix this?
Breathing and the use of oxygen is directly related to your fitness level. You should not try to control your breathing while running. To do so may cause side-stitches and discomfort. Breate through your mouth to get the oxygen quickly to your muscles. Run at a pace where your breathing is in rhythm with your stride. As you get more fit, your breathing will become more efficient and you will be able to run at a higher intensity--or faster. Pushing your body beyond its capabilities can only cause problems. Be patient and give your body time to adjust to the new stress you are placing on it.
